The launch of any watch by Farer is reason enough for fanfare. The brand’s new Field Watch Collection is no exception. And unlike a lot of microbrand launches, there will be no wait time on this one. The Exmoor, Lomond, and Pembroke are ready and available for immediate shipping.

All three references in the new collection are fashioned from marine-grade 316L stainless steel, in a somewhat recognizable field watch case—round fixed-bezel, clean lines, brushed texture, in a handsome 38.5mm package. However, they will have the added protection of side crown protectors for a more robust design. The caseback is highly polished and displays a mountain vista rising from a lake alongside an engraved line of text: ON LAND AND WATER. True to its proclamation, the Farer Field Watch boasts 200m of water resistance, which is somewhat atypical of more traditional field watches.

The movement powering the collection is the Swiss-made Sellita SW221-1 with a 38-hour power reserve, built in shock system, and the added touch of a pointer date.

All three colourways are treated with Grade A Super-LumiNova and make use of a custom Farer ‘A’ date pointer. The watches all have flat, double AR-coated sapphire crystals, as well. Coupled with the high-contrast dials—and generous lume—each watch in the collection should maintain a superior level of legibility.

In addition, each watch comes with three straps. This added versatility is sure to please enthusiasts (not to mention save them money). The integrated bracelet (with tri-fold clasp) is accompanied by a Horween leather strap and a nylon NATO. The entire kit is delivered in a bespoke travel case.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Field watches frequently take on a utilitarian simplicity that can be attractive in its straightforwardness. The ubiquitous Hamilton Khaki, the iconic Rolex Explorer, and the understated Tudor Heritage Ranger all have a charm and nobility owed to their direct design. The new Farer collection of field watches maintains that tradition in the styling of its case but adds a dose of both style and panache to the dial. The texturing, the pointer date, and the blend of colour elevate and contemporize these models. However, they do not come off as garish or as though they are chasing a fad. The choices are bold, but classy.

Furthermore, beyond aesthetics, touches like the added water resistance, the protective crown guard panels, and the flexibility of strap offerings add increments of practicality unavailable in the popular aforementioned competitors. At £875 (1190USD), these watches will retail in a tight bracket against many Seiko sport offerings, and a host of other laudable microbrands. But they remain significantly less than a number of Swiss competitors. In the end, I’m betting that they have the chops and enough style to make their way in the urban jungle.
