Off the Cuff: RZE Resolute 2022

Almost a year ago to the day, I received my first look at the RZE Resolute–the brand’s popular titanium field watch. Just last week I received its successor–the Resolute 2022. Clearly born from the same DNA, the all-new Resolute is still an ultra-durable field watch wrought from titanium and 8 times harder than 316L stainless steel. It’s light weight and fashioned for exploration. Like a fighter, it’s been training in the off-season and is back–slim, trim and prepared to take a beating.

While the case shape will appear familiar, measuring in at 40mm in diameter and a comfortable 46mm lug to lug–just like its predecessor–the updated version has shaved a millimeter off its midsection to come in under 10.5mm thick. This is due, in part, to the movement change from the old NH35 to a slimmer Miyota 90S5. Even with its matching titanium bracelet, the watch comes in at a featherweight 92g. This lighter, trimmer self remains coated in the brand’s proprietary UltraHex™️, which staves off scratches.

Rugged good looks @calibre321

The switch to the new Miyota calibre has other benefits, as well. The 90S5 is an upgrade to a 4Hz movement, which offers a smoother second hand sweep.

Like all models in the RZE stable, the Resolute has a decidedly modern appearance. Its angular, step case is full of bead-blasted planes and razor sharp edges. The crown is large and easy to manipulate. It is signed and screwed down, like the case back. With 100m of water resistance, you won’t have to worry about moisture on your backwoods adventures. You could take this fellow diving in a pinch. Every inch a tool watch, the Resolute also has the added convenience of drilled lugs for easy strap changes. With a 20mm lug width, it is sure to be a strap monster to boot.

Its rugged good looks are complemented by its updated dial. The subtly sand-textured dial retains its bold, pencil handset, but adds a reverse lollipop seconds. However, the greatest change, for those familiar with the original, comes with the addition of numerals at 3, 6, and 9–a clear nod to the field watches of yore (most notably the Explorer). There is also an assertive, inverted triangle at twelve. The increased legibility will certainly appeal to field watch purists. Both the hands and all applied markers have been lavishly coated in Swiss Super-LumiNova, as well. The yellow reference featured here will be joined by white, grey, and pink dials.

Titanium bracelet @calibre321

I have always been a fan of the RZE titanium bracelet. Its articulating, H-Link construction and milled clasp are impeccably finished. The bracelet has screwed links for easy sizing and the tolerances at the lug ends are immaculate. However, there is also a robust black canvas strap option with metal rivets and titanium hardware.

Of Interest

The RZE bracelet is compatible across all of the brand’s current watch collections. If you intend to own more than one RZE, you could save a little at checkout and trade out the bracelet.

Quibbles

While the canvas strap is sturdy and well-made, I find it stiff and lacking in taper.

Final Thoughts

RZE have done yeoman’s labour in the last few years to build something, where before, there was nothing. Rather than simply designing watches, they have developed an aesthetic. Their timepieces are immediately recognizable. From the beginning, the brand had a vision, and they have remained true to that vision. Moreover, now, with the first reissue of one of their original designs, enthusiasts can see that the company is able to accept feedback and build upon those suggestions without compromising what they set out to create in the first place. The Resolute 2022 is a better watch than the original…and that’s saying something, as the original was a homerun. But it is still an RZE–contemporary, titanium, and tough as nails.

The Resolute 2022 is available for preorder at $399USD on canvas, and $499USD on the bracelet. For more information, visit the brand website.

  1. I’ve seen this one, on screen…and I appreciate it but I feel like it’s almost to basic for RZE. Still a nice watch, that’s for sure
