I’m just going to come out and say it–MMI are killing it. We had the opportunity to review the Turret Marine Chronograph a few months ago, and we just got in another colourway this past week for some photography. A super little chrono, all around. This new version of the Turret 300m Diver–a reissue of their own first watch–is also a homerun. So much so…that it’s already sold out.

That’s right. The pre-order sold out before the review watch could make it here. So why are you reading? Well, so that you can be better prepared for the next release, of course.

Like the V1 and the Marine Chrono, the V2 recycles the brand’s popular Turret case–based on the gun turret of the USS Monitor, and employing a recessed bezel. It’s 40mm in diameter and a comfortable 47mm lug to lug. For a diver, it isn’t all that thick either, at 13.6mm. But its lovely sloping profile, which follows the curvature of your wrist, makes it wear even smaller.

The V2 was issued in 4 new colourways–Steel Black, Retro Blue, Silver O, and the Sand Black version featured here. The Sand Black is easily my favourite. Its dial has an almost tropicalized hue with highlights and lume that appear to have patinaed. The biggest difference (and I would say, upgrade) from the V1 is the Rota-wheel date complication, borrowed from the brand’s Marine Chrono. While I liked the reverse pointer date complication on the chrono, I dare say it works even better on the simpler dial of the Turret 300. The rotating date indicator is now also more visible, due to an application day-glow paint. They have also added an ion-plated steel bezel insert (instead of aluminum)–which is five to eight times more durable to corrosion and wear than traditional stainless steel.

Like its predecessor, the crown and caseback of the Turret 300 V2 are screwed down and offer the titular 300m of water resistance.

The V2 has a flat sapphire crystal with a laudable 10 layers of AR on the underside only. Its lume is Grade X1, C3 Super-LumiNova, and it is powered by Seiko’s workhorse NH35A.

The stainless steel bracelet tapers from 22mm at the lugs to 20mm at the milled clasp. It employs screwed links for easy sizing, and offers 5 increments of micro-adjust.

Quibbles

While the concept behind a recessed bezel is meant to prevent accidental movement while diving, as with past models, manipulation of said bezel can be tricky. It is best gripped at the 12 and 6 positions.

Final Thoughts

The Turret 300 V2 is a near perfect diver. It is a function first instrument with small innovative extras like the Rota-wheel complication and ion-plated bezel insert. It is aesthetically simple in its symmetry, but deceptively attractive at the same time. From the choice of handset, and the way it reinforces the shape and size of its applied indices, to the tastefully chosen colourways, nothing seems jarring or out of place. The Turret case is a winner and clearly polyvalent. But when you factor in the price–of $288USD–it is hard to imagine a better value proposition on the market. The Turret 300 V2 is a Seiko diver on steroids.
