On Spec: MB&F LM Perpetual Stainless Steel

I don’t think there’s a more revolutionary or unique brand in watchmaking than MB&F. Standing for Maximillian Büsser & Friends, the brand takes great pride in their watches from the perspective of their collaborators (friends), as well as the pure engineering art produced with each piece. Each watch created by MB&F is mesmerizing, but the most complicated and hypnotizing in their catalogue is the Legacy Machine Perpetual. Past models have implemented different material and colour options for the case and dials. However, MB&F had not used one of the most common materials in wristwatches, stainless steel, until now.

“First launched in 2015, the LM Perpetual has been since crafted in red gold, platinum, white gold, titanium, yellow gold and palladium. In 2023, a new variation joins the family – the LM Perpetual Stainless Steel, carrying a rich salmon-coloured plate.

Stainless steel cases and salmon dials are the most beautiful when put together. The ruggedness of stainless steel and the elegance and richness of a beautiful salmon dial create a gorgeous aesthetic. Brands have used salmon dials for decades in combination with a stainless steel case. Still, the combination hits hard in the beauty and complexity of the Legacy Machine Perpetual.

“The steel and salmon combination being a first for MB&F. The new edition also inherits the ergonomic corrector pushers first seen on the LM Perpetual EVO editions.”

While the Legacy Machine Perpetual measures 44mm in diameter and 17mm thick, it’s on the larger side for an excellent reason—the gorgeous, fully integrated, in-house, three-dimensional movement produced for MB&F by Stephen McDonnell. Perpetual calendar movements are already complicated, no pun intended, but Stephen took complex and turned it up to eleven.

The Legacy Machine Perpetual features dial-side complications and mechanical processor system architecture. The mechanical processor uses a default 28-day and adds extra days as required, eliminating redundant days and protecting the movement from incorrect manipulation or unnecessary stress. The movement also features manual winding with two mainspring barrels, a bespoke 14mm balance wheel floating beautifully on top of the chronograph complications, 41 jewels and a 72-hour power reserve.

The 581 components comprise the perpetual calendar movement and receive superlative hand-finishing to reflect the same finishing techniques used in the 19th century. The Legacy Machine Perpetual is the perfect example of engineering as art. From the construction to the finishing and complexity of the in-house movement, there’s a reason MB&F is a brand held in such high regard.

“The fully integrated, purpose-built movement of Legacy Machine Perpetual has been designed from scratch for trouble-free use: no more skipping dates or jamming gears, and the adjuster pushers automatically deactivate when the calendar changes, so no problems there either!”

  1. The dial has so many things going for it – it’s insane! Imagine the amount of work that goes into producing one!

  2. If anything, the level of complexity on these Legacy Perpetuals make them pieces that deserve to be showcased.

  3. These MB&F watches will never not be totally amazing. The minds that created this need to win an Oscar or Grammy or something like that 😁
